Smart borrowing tips
A handful of habits that separate a loan you can handle from one that handles you.
Ask for the APR out loud
Lenders are required to disclose it, but it's not always the number they lead with. If you only hear a flat dollar fee, ask directly: "What's the APR on this?"
Ask what happens if you're late
Before signing, ask exactly what a missed or late payment triggers — a fee, a rollover, repossession. If the answer is vague, that's a red flag on its own.
Borrow the amount you need, not the amount offered
Lenders often approve more than you asked for. A bigger loan means a bigger finance charge — take only what solves the actual problem.
Get two offers before you sign one
Costs for the same loan type can vary a lot lender to lender. A second quote costs you nothing and often changes the decision.
Check for alternatives first
A payment plan with the biller, a pay-advance from an employer, or a local credit union's small-dollar loan program can all cost less than a short-term loan.
Write down the total payoff amount
Not the payment — the full amount you'll have paid by the time the loan is done, including every fee. Compare that single number across offers.
